SAGE-AU welcomes Opposition stand on Internet filter

Australia's peak technology group SAGE-AU today welcomes the Federal Opposition statement that it intends to ditch the ALP’s policy of mandatory Internet filtering if it wins the August 21 election.

Opposition Treasury spokesman Joe Hockey yesterday announced that a Coalition Government would abandon Labor's filtering policy, describing it as "flawed" and stating that it would not work.

SAGE-AU's spokesperson Iain Robertson said the Opposition’s support for the importance of parental responsibility vindicated the organisation's position. "We have long stated that education and empowerment of caregivers is preferential to any technically-based ISP filtering scheme,” he said.

“SAGE-AU agrees that the filter as proposed by the Gillard Government is unworkable."
